Highlight Video from 2009
We now have our highlight video from the 2009 International projects here! We hope that you will start to pray for our 2010 international project. We will be selecting our teams over the next month and we will start getting ready for what God will be doing in Brazil in March of 2010!

First off, I (Jacob) hope everyone has enjoyed the blog from both teams so far. Each evening at dinner we read the blog for the day and the comments from the previous day and really enjoy hearing from all of you who have commented. Everyone who has written has done a great job, but I am going to recap things a little differently, just because I’m different.
The afternoon session Wednesday was as wonderful as all the others. The team already has in mind who should be our first Brazilian Little Chief and Comanche. You might be wondering how day camp in the middle of the school year works, since Brazil is in fall, and therefore not on Spring Break. The public education system here in Brazil is good but is overwhelmed with students. To accommodate, they offer three (and in some cases four) shifts of school each day. Kids who attend the afternoon session of school come to camp pre-lunch and kids who go in the morning stop in for the later camp offering. High schools and colleges have night schedules, allowing students to work during the daylight hours and be in class after. This staggered class setup has helped our attendance increase each day, as kids from morning camp see their friends at lunch that just left school. They spread the word about what’s happening at the church, and more and more children come each session.
Our nights are continuing to be filled with delectable food, cherished fellowship, and the ongoing search for the mythical monster frog. As the appointed team naturalist, I feel a personal responsibility to find the aforementioned amphibian before the close of the week, even if it means a moonlight jungle expedition (don’t worry Mom, we haven’t seen any snakes yet). Another note on the environment of Brazil: in a word, remarkable. I think even the least biologically inclined among us will bring home a wider view of just how profound and expansive our God’s creative handiwork is.
Wednesday we broke through the wall of “third session” and got a good night’s sleep, equally embracing and dreading our final day of “Cadê?”. The team recognized the God-sized opportunity before them, with parents as well as children at the closing program today, but also hates having to say goodbye to the beautiful campers. All of us here are WinShape Camp staffers during the summer, and I think everyone would say they see God’s face for those eight weeks in the summer full of lives changed for Christ. We saw the face of God again in just four days here, and that message was definitely not lost in translation. Along with that is another note from above that has been underscored here- Everyone is searching for Good News; those that have heard are compelled to share; those that hear are moved to respond.
Right now between sessions everything is calm. Some people are sleeping, others quietly reflecting on the past days, some building houses of playing cards, and one swimming through an ocean of thoughts and feelings while slowly tapping out a few on a laptop. Those that are napping have earned it though. Today was the unveiling of the queen of WinShape boogies, the Hamster Dance. We craftily snuck a bomb through airport security and exploded it today, just a Diet Coke and Mentos one. The morning’s activities continued with a special order of the day as the kids finished their last craft, a cotton ball sheep. Then they had small group time and took pictures with their camper t-shirts. After a great snack of Brazilian hotdogs parents arrived and we all celebrated the week of camp. Afterwards some tough good-byes were said, pictures were snapped, and eyes were teared.
Well, recovery time is over as the first kids are arriving right on schedule, 20 minutes early. There are too many people to be thanked, from the support team here in Brazil to the bedtime prayers of American campers 5000 miles away from their South American counterparts. God integrally used each part of them (read as: you) to make this week possible and successful for His will to be done and name be furthered in Brasilia.
Joy, Peace and Love to you-
WSC IP Team 2

For starters, we would like to correct a statement that was made in a previous blog. We said that we had a Portuguese feast, but Marney quickly corrected us after she read the blog saying, “Portuguese can’t cook! It’s a Brazilian feast!” Sorry for that error!
Yesterday was a day full of blessings from God. We had many more campers and were ecstatic about that. Jacob’s group tripled in size going from only 4 to 12. The other groups grew as well. The camp schedule continues to get smoother each time we do it. We are all getting used to the hectic schedule and it is more fun each time as well. The ride home in the van/bus was very educational yesterday. We played a brand new game called “joshopedia.” Josh knows the most random information any of us have ever heard, so we decided to quiz him on the facts he knows (it really is actually pretty amazing). It quickly spread to a categories style game, giving the participants only 30 seconds to tell every thing they know about whatever category is shouted. Fun and educational all in one, who would have ever thought! Alison has officially had the most celebrated birthday ever. I cannot even count how many times we sang happy birthday to her in both Portuguese and English. The cake dona Gon Gon made her was AMAZING!!!! It was chocolate with coconut inside covered with enough fruit to last Alison a lifetime. Of course, we all shared this delightful treat with her for dessert after our awesome dinner.
It has become a tradition to have nightly outings looking for the great wildlife in Brazil. Thanks to Jacob’s knowledge and videographer skills we now have National Geographic footage of giant Brazilian ants. Of course, still no giant frog. Hopefully tonight on our night hike! After our adventure, some of the leadership team (aka Trudy and Ruby) decided it would be funny to pull pranks on our birthday girl. They, along with their roommates put some heart balloons under her pillow and mattress and short sheeted her bed. Alison did not realize she even had a balloon under her mattress and she thought Hamunda, the lady who graciously cleans up after us, made her bed wrong. This kept the whole room up laughing all night and Ashley had to go tell Ruby and her room to stop laughing so we could sleep. Funny how the tables turn!
After that exciting night many of us got up early and went to milk the cow. For most of us it was our first experience doing that. Some were not so great, while others were pros (Brent). We had a blast and the cow was definitely relieved, in more ways than one, might I add. With the lack of sleep and staying up to late doing extra-campular activities, we were all worn out today. We still managed to make it through and love every bit, only with God’s strength. The campers had loads of fun playing drip, drip, drop and other water games in recreation, making slushies in wacky science, and making sheep in crafts. Each day we are learning more Portuguese and the campers are learning more English. It is so exciting to see how God is transforming not only the campers, but their family and onlookers as well.
Last night we were also able to hear a little but of what God is doing through the camp this week. Andre shared some stories with the team which were encouraging and has show us that God really is using this experience in the life’s of the campers. We have had parents and grandparents already talk about the change in their children, and some people in the apartments around the church that have never been here have decided to come. We have also heard that most of the children that have attended the camp are not members of the church and many of them do not have any church background at all. And lastly we have even had a spiritist mother send her child to camp; this is huge as she would probably never be in a church if not for this setting.
God has clearly done amazing things thus far this week and it is going to be so hard for all us to leave a place we have come to love. Thanks to all of you who have been faithfully praying for our team. Please continue to pray, as tomorrow could possibly be the biggest day for the campers. Their families are invited to all come tomorrow and the pastor of the church will be giving a message to everyone. Mrs. Trudy will also be explaining to the families about WinShape and what we have been doing here. JD has had the opportunity to pour into the lives of two boys who are too old to be a camper, but still wanted to hang around. He is talking them today again and is going to ask them about the Lord. God is amazing an has been faithful through everything, what more could we ask for?
Mallory- loves Fufa!
Ashley- had fun milking Agnes, the cow.
Brittany- milked a cow this morning!
Jessica- is still saying cade sapo? (where is the frog??)
John David- has a girlfriend named Catalina.
Nicole- enjoyed her trip to the Brazilian McDonalds
Jacob- is busy with a much bigger group during the day and being our resident frog professor at night
Alison- Ramunda made my bed backwards…haha!
Josh- can’t believe that Brazil only has 24 hours in a day.
Kaelyn(me)- cannot believe tomorrow is the last day of camp!
Brent- found his new calling in life—milking a cow. Columbo is scared his job will be taken away.
Angela F- two days with no naps= really tired.
Speedy- is glad that Brazilian kids love camp as much as kids back home.
Julie- Portuguese is much easier to read than to speak, but there are things that transcend all language barriers: smiles, hugs, cheers, music, and McDonalds! Missing you AG & D! ps- your daddy got wet in a game.
Angela R- is certain she is going to have WSCIP withdrawal when this is over, but is striving to act like it never will be.
John- Is busy getting wet as he is playing water games with all the kids!
Trudy- her experience of mixing Nesquick over the years has definitely come in handy when mixing kool-aid for wacky science.
Marney and Andre: says hey to Team 1!
Go Big or Go Home - I mean Go Home BIG!

The afternoon session of camp on Day 1 was a bit smaller than the morning group but it gave us all a chance to really spend intentional time with the kids we had. They taught us a fun game about a pop-sicle man which really helps teach us our colors in Portuguese. Afternoon was smoother than the morning…we have the schedule down now!! Not to brag Team 1 but we were out of the church in 30 minutes! (and Fufa has grown to love us possibly more than Team 1…ha)
I just love WinShape because every day has a surprise…usually revolving around food! We stopped on the way back to Agua Viva (Living Water) for ice cream. Mr. John and Brent gave us a tour of the city while Marney, Andre and FUFA drove fearlessly through the traffic. Donna GonGon had a Southern Style Brazilian Feast waiting for us when we got home including fried chicken, fried okra, pumpkin, homemade chips, rice and beans, and passion fruit cake. If you haven’t figured it out, we eat a lot here! We love the food and will try anything. We have a new slogan. Instead of “go big or go home’, we say “GO HOME BIG!!!”
After dinner we went frog hunting. The guys had fun scaring the girls. Fun fact: Jacob knows way too much information about frogs! If you have any question, ask him! Jessica was a little scared of the tree frog Jacob was holding and told him to hold it tight…she didn’t want the frog to come on to her!
The sky is unbelievably beautiful no matter what time a day it is! When we left for cap yesterday morning at 5:45 the sunrise was amazing and every time I look it’s breathtaking! Last night the sky was orange…Andre said that means it will rain today. It hasn’t yet but it would be nice! We’ve been lucky not to have rain during camp but it would be nice to cool things off a little.
We got to sleep in this morning! Breakfast was at 6:15. When we arrived at the church campers were waiting outside for us! They are so excited about camp. This morning has been wonderful. We did the Cupid Shuffle with the kids…they might think Americans are crazy! People in the apartment buildings around us have been staring out the windows wondering what we’re doing! Leo and Mauricio have thrown a lot of new worship songs at us! It’s funny to watch us try to repeat what they say!
Alison was featured today for her birthday! We sang in Portuguese and then in English. She never thought she would have a camp birthday…much less in Brazil! We have painted fish, played tail tag and made paper airplanes with the campers today! It has been amazing! Jocob, Brittany and I (Mallory) painted our faces for our groups! Yellow, Green and AZUL!!! (I’m not bias ☺). The kids loved it and wanted some on theirfaces.
The last surprise that we had today was a visit from Andrea and Chico. These two great young people were members of the Church that John and Trudy served with in a town close to here. Also, Andrea was Joy’s (John and Trudy’s Oldest daughter) best friend as a child. If any of The White’s are reading, they said hello and are sending hugs your way!
I think I can speak for everyone when I say that this experience is beyond words! We can’t express how grateful we are to be here, loving on these kids. They are so loving and really excited to see us when they get here. I have loved every minute and will really hate to leave Agua Viva. Marney, Andre and the rest of the staff have really done an excellent job showing us around and translating for us! We are so blessed to be a part of WinShape Camps International Project! I can’t wait to see how the Lord works in and through us the rest of this week! Thanks to those back home who have been praying for us! We miss you all and are excited to share our stories!
Rapido (Speedy) is enjoying running around playing games with the Brazilian campers! (However he keeps running out of gas...)
Julie is glad to be in a country where watermelon is in season now. Love to AG & D!!!!
Jessica is up to her knees in paint!
Alison is 22 and having the best Brazilian birthday ever!
Nicole is speaking Spanguese
KWats is feeling fine even after licking a spiky unknown fruit growing on the farm.
Ashley is finally getting to enjoy a nap after blogging for an hour and a half yesterday. She says that Round Up should become the new aerobic exercise phenomenon.
Brittany is snoozing…worn out after a grande group of 4-8 year old's
Brenche (Brent) found a new camper friend who kept trying to talk to him. Brent just smiles and nods!
Jacob is wearing his hat backwards! Pedro says it’s cooler that way.
Jon Gigante is a jungle gym.
Angela Fielder about lost her shorts in tail tag!
Hubenacker might not be able to get used to taking just one shower a day after being in Brazil for 3 weeks and taking multiple showers every day
Josh can only imagine what a Baptist Brazilian Potluck would be like
My (Mallory’s) Portuguese is acrescentando (growing)
Tru”g”y is the garbage collector around the church and in the community!
Thank you for picking up after us!
Mr. John is sleeping in the back pew with a table cloth covering him.
We are off to a great start!
Wow!! I truly am speechless at this whole experience here in Brazil! My heart is so full to see how our team is coming together and working so hard these last few days. I am more than honored and blessed to be here with WinShape Camps as we show the love of Christ to these Brazilians! I honestly could live here forever ☺. It’s so beautiful and the people here are so amazingly kind and loving!! It’s great!!
Yesterday we had another fun filled day that kept us busy and gave us another great night’s sleep! We had the most delicious lunch prepared by Mr. John and Andre – a Portuguese barbeque. I have never tasted food so good! That’s one thing that we all can’t get enough of around here – FOOD! Everything we have put into our mouths has been delicious! After our feast of yummy food we had some more time to train with our team. We practiced some skits and some more music. We are starting to get the hang of some of the songs….kinda! Portuguese is harder than you think – it’s not like Spanish at all. We were able to hear the testimony of our friend Lina and her team from Giannopoulos (that’s probably not spelled right so don’t go try to look it up- sorry). She has with her a group that has started such an impactful mission for children. It was so uplifting and exciting to hear how God is working through their ministry. After their testimony they gave us some gifts, homemade necklaces and broaches for the girls and key chains for the boys. They were beautiful! They told us that they didn’t have much, but what they had they wanted to share with us. We are so thankful for them and how they help our team with translating and music time and sooo much more!
After the rest of training and getting things ready and packed for camp the next morning, we were treated to some delicious watermelon from Dona Gon Gon (I just love her!). That’s another part of this country that makes me never want to leave it, the fruit! It’s all so fresh and tastes so good! After our watermelon we got showered up and ready for church.
Church was an unbelievable experience! We sometimes forget that God is the God of the WHOLE world and knows all languages. And at church it was so wonderful to see how the Brazilians worshipped. It was a more contemporary church, which is not the typical church here in Brazil, and everyone there was so welcoming and kind. We sang some praise songs in Portuguese that we sing back home, like God of Wonders and Mighty to Save. It was so beautiful to hear them praise the same God that we praise way back home in America. Then the pastor got up to welcome everyone and asked us if we knew the song Mighty to Save, and of course we did and he then asked us to all stand in front and sing that song. OH WOW! We all of sudden got a little nervous, to say the least. But we willingly stood up and all sang Mighty to Save in English for the church and you could definitely feel the Holy Spirit moving in that church. It was all a huge mix of English and Portuguese but God understood every word and I’m sure was dancing in Heaven! Once we sat down the pastor shared a sermon on how to make the church a more welcoming place – this was only understood by the help of Marney! He said he wanted the church to become a place that people could come and feel loved, not be afraid of what people will think of them or what God will think of them. It was a powerful message followed by some more singing. It was incredible!
Then after church, more eating…YES! We headed to a pizza place that was again..delicous! We all had too many slices because they just kept coming and coming. It was not pizza like we have back home. We all loved it! We laughed and shared lots of stories…including some fun ones about team one (Carol Erica…”Hands up?? Baby, hands up??? Haha). And LB, Fufa shared his song with us. Thanks for teaching it to him…we love to hear him sing it.
Then we headed home for the night. It rained really hard on our way home, which made Fufa slow down a bit, believe it or not! Once we got back to the house we had a short pow wow…interrupted by me (Ashley) screaming and jumping because while I was walking in a wasp or something flew up my skirt and bit me when I sat down in the living room. Poor Angela Hubenacker thought I was upset about something she said….but I was just trying to get the wasp out from under my skirt – not my proudest moment to say the least! ha
Then it was time for bed! Praise the Lord for comfortable beds and getting a full nights sleep!
Then it was back up at 5 am to start the day! We all were anxious to be up and ready this morning and get the day started. We all had some quick breakfast and loaded up the van and took about a 45-minute bus ride (sorry team 1) to our church. We arrived this morning at the church we will be working at all week. We all set up and were so excited to get the day started. Kids started showing up and we knew that this was it! Green team, lead by Brittany, is tied with the Blue team, lead by Mallory, with being the biggest group. And then Jacob has a group of four 11-year-old boys, and he loves them! We kicked off the day with our icebreakers, which included our skit (John David, Alison, Mallory and Ashley were the stars today) and our Janie Bird song…the chicken dance! They loved it!! It was funny to see them try to figure out what in the world we were doing at first, but they came around. Then we headed to Grange Grupo (large group time) and kicked it off with Round Up! PHEW- what a way to kick off the morning! We sang some other songs both in Portuguese and in English. These kids love to learn in English and do a way better job at us than learning Portuguese. Then we started our skill times. Each group went to each skill for about 20 minutes or so today. They all went great. Josh did an awesome job showing oobleck, which the loved! Jessica has really been working hard on learning her Portuguese and it has helped during crafts time. And Speedy is just loving being a counselor again showing these kids how to play games. We are absolutely loving every minute of this!
The day ran smoothly and we have all had a ton of fun but are EXHAUSTED. In fact I am the only one awake right now from out team, they are all sleeping around me on the floor/stage/pews. So I think it’s my turn to nap now too.
But before I go, please continue to pray for our team as we give these next few days our all. Pray that barriers would be broken through language and understanding and that the Holy Spirit will be filled in this place, we know He is doing a great work already!
Oh and tomorrow is Alison Nichol’s birthday! WAAHOOO!!!

Today is a wonderful day. The countryside of Brasil is beautiful .
After eating lunch at a precious café in Sao Paulo (yesterday), we went to another airport to make it to our connecting flight to Brasilia. After a bus ride to “Agua Viva,” the place where we are staying, we were greeted with open arms. Agua Viva is amazing. The views from our front porch are breathtaking. We are enjoying every moment we have here. It feels like we’ve been here a week already. Last night after a session of learning and exploring around, we went to bed early, and got a lot of sleep to recover from traveling.
Today, we hit the road running by learning worship songs in Portuguese, going over our daily schedule, and practicing all of the skills/crafts/wacky science activities. Training today with the Brasilian team has been amazing. Their testimony is amazing, and we can’t wait to tell you all about it when we get home.
Jacob: is running around the room with bull horns learning the song “Round up”.
Mallory: is lying in the hammock after an amazing lunch.
Ashley: thinks her family should move to Brasil and live here forever.
Alison: is sunbathing and thinks Brittney should join her.
Brittany: loves the fresh honey, straight from the “woods.”
Jon David: the brazilian Giant is the worship leader...breaking it down.... Also, he just shook it up.
Speedy: is H-A-P-P-Y! ... And says hello to his kids.
Julie: Tudu bem? Tudo bem!
Jessica(me): is going to lose her passport so she can’t come back to the states.
Josh: would love to always work in the summer... Brazilian summer and American summer. Also, he did a great job teaching us the dance to “Single Ladies” on the airplane.
Kaleyn: is peace... “literally.”
Nicole: loves brazilian juices and can’t wait to see the kids tomorrow.
Angela R: made a brazilian friend that is comfortable enough to soak her with water.
Angela F: is enjoying being back at in her home country and is enjoying the sun.
Brent: is thinking about all of the weight he is going to gain this week from the cooking of Dona Gon Gon... And excited that he got to celebrate a camp birthday.
Please continue to pray for us as we start our first day of camp tomorrow. Pray for God to move in “unexpected” ways. Pray expecting powerful things to happen. We appreciate all of your love and support back home. Peace.
Hey Guest What?....We are in BRAZIL!
Team 2 has made it to BRAZIL! We are happy to report that we are all safe and sound and we are in the Sau Palo Airport as we wait for our next plane. We will be leaving here in about 30 minutes and heading to Brasilia which should only be about a 2 hour flight. Last night was a fun adventure... Our first experience was trying to get speedy checked in at the Atlanta airport (which is about an hour long story) but the short story is that somehow his ticket got cancelled and put under Mallory’s name... So Mallory had two tickets and Speedy had none. Brent, Speedy, and Julie stood at the Delta counter for about an hour and a half and hung out with our new friends at delta!
The flight was good. We have several that have not flown internationally before, so this was a great experience. When we landed we all made it through customs extremely smoothly and then we were met by Ivan who had transportation arranged for us and we headed from one airport (where we landed) to another airport in Sau Palo. We were able to stop and eat at a café and the team was able to try some fresh fruit juice, pao de queijo (cheese bread which is amazing) and some great coffee. Then we have headed to the other airport and we are now waiting. Team 1 will be flying into this airport as well, but we will miss seeing them by about 15 minutes :(.
Anyhow, we are all well and will post as often as we can. We appreciate all of your prayers and can not wait to see what God has in store for us this week!
Ashley: is really excited to be here but trying to work through the lack of any sleep last night!
Josh: He is not missing the 30 degree weather and snow in Kentucky!!
Nicole: Wishing that our flight could get delayed so she could see Keenan. But having a good time.
Brittany: Is thankful that she is one of the few that got to sleep like a baby on the plane
Mallory: Well Mallory was the last one on her phone to leave the states, tried to steal Speedy’s plane ticket (which is what took him so long to check in), tried to stay in the Brazilian customs longer than anyone and is feeling amazing after just getting to brush her teeth!
Jessica: Is making friends with every person she sees... She is excited about meeting a lot of Brazilians and has made many friends already.
Jon David: Found out that he is too tall for an airplane...
Speedy: Is just thankful to be here!
Julie: says hey to Addie Grace and Daryl
Alison: is laughing secretly at everything and no one knows why...
Jacob: has been very un-studious with his Portuguese lessons...
Kaelyn: Just conquered her first commercial flight and made it successfully!
Angela: Is thankful for her new inflatable neck-pillow... Thank You Target!
Brent: Does not understand why everyone can not sleep on a plane?!? I just slept for a solid 6 hours and I am ready to go! (Brazilian coffee helped as well!)
